Shandong University of Finance and Economics is a provincial university located in Jinan, the capital city of Shandong province. It has been approved by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council to award bachelor and master’s degree. It has been approved to start the construction of Ph. D. programs.
The university was established on July 4th, 2011 by combining Shandong Economic University and Shandong University of Finance. Shandong Economic University was established in 1952 as Shandong Institute of Finance and Economics, which was combined by Shandong Vocational School of Accounting and the Department of Economics of Qilu University. The institute was the earliest college in finance and economics in Shandong province, and one of the earliest in China. The institute was closed during the Cultural Revolution. In 1978, it was approved by the State Council to open again as Shandong Economic University. In 1993, it was approved to award master’s degree. Shandong University of Finance was established in 1986 jointly by the Ministry of Finance of China and the provincial government of Shandong province. In early years, it was under the supervision of the Ministry of Finance and co-constructed by the ministry and the provincial government. After 2000, the local government took the main responsibility of administering the university.
Shandong University of Finance and Economics is constituted of 4 campuses, occupying 4,818 mu of land. It contains 21 schools and 56 undergraduate programs. There are 33,000 full-time students, including about 31,000 undergraduates and 2,000 postgraduates. It offers postgraduate courses in 10 first-class specialties like Applied Economics, Business Administration and Management Science and Engineering, and 56 second-class specialties. It has 12 specialty programs like MBA and MPA. At present, the university has 16 provincial-level key disciplines. Among these, Public Finance, Finance, Business Administration, Accounting, International Trade and Management Science and engineering are provincial-level stylistic key disciplines. The university has 4 positions for Taishan Scholars in Public Finance, Finance, Business Administration and Accounting.
The university currently has over 1,900 teachers, among which more than 900 are professors and associate professors. More than 1,600 teachers have master’s degree. 515 teachers have Ph. D degree. One of our teachers has made a nationally recognized outstanding contribution. 14 teachers enjoy the special pension from the State Council. 4 teachers are distinguished professors with the title of Taishan Scholars of Shandong province. One teacher was selected as one of the New Century Ten Billion Talents Project. 2 teachers were selected for the New Century Talents Supporting Plan of the Ministry of Education. 5 teachers have made province-level recognized contribution13 teachers are province or ministry-level outstanding talents in their specialized field. 19 teachers were selected for the Base of High-level Talents of Shandong Province. 17 teachers are recognized as national-level excellent teachers. 12 teachers are recognized as excellent teachers of Shandong Province. There are also 50 Ph.D. supervisors.
The university has been labeled as Excellent in the Undergraduate Education Evaluation carried by the Ministry of Education in 2006. Currently the university has 1 experimental department of innovative talents training patterns, 7 characterized disciplines recognized by the Ministry of Education, 11 brand disciplines at the provincial level, 1 demonstrative bilingual course recognized by the Ministry of Education, 27 refined courses of provincial level. In the recent two evaluations of teaching, the university has won 38 prizes of provincial level, 1 second prize of national level, 5 first prizes and 14 second prizes of provincial level.
The university has complete modernized teaching and experimental equipment. It now has 5 provincial-level key labs like Research Center of Digital Business Engineering, Digital Media Lab, Research Center of Finance Information Technology, etc. it also has 2 demonstrative teaching centers and 13 key teaching experiment centers.
At present, the buildings take up 1.0829 million ㎡. The buildings for teaching, research and administration occupy 753300㎡. The total value of the academic and research equipment reaches 14,455,180 RMB. The university holds 3.5153 million volumes of printed books. In addition, there are 2.6237 million volumes of digitized books. An Ethernet has been built to cover the whole university. There are also comprehensive facilities such as the labs, library, stadium, dormitories and cafeterias.
The university has made impressive achievements in research. Since 2006, the university has conducted 1,023 projects of provincial or responsible ministry level, among which 209 are state-level projects. 393 theses were indexed by SCI、EI、ISTP、SSCI, etc. The university has been allocated 118.6 million RMB as research funds, i.e., 1.976 million RMB per year. The university has 6 provincial-level research bases like Research Base of Soft Science of Shandong Regional Economy Development, the Research Base of Shandong Public Finance and Finance, the Research Base of Shandong Public Finance System and Social Security System, Research Base of Innovation and Development in Service Industry. It has also established research institutions like Research Institution of Regional Economy, Research Center of Economy, Research Center of Agriculture and Rural Economy.
The two journals, Review of Economy and Management and Journal of Shandong University of Finance and Economics, belong to the core journals of Chinese humanity and social science. They have great influence in the state academy.
The university sticks to running the university openly and makes achievements in domestic and international exchanges. The university follows the internationalization of higher education and actively carries out wide range of exchanges and cooperation with overseas colleges and institutions in countries like the USA, Canada, Britain, Australia, France, Germany, South Korea, etc. The university cooperates with Latrobe University in Australia and Dalhousie University in Canada in training undergraduate students. Up to now there are more than 200 graduates. The university started to receive foreign students from 1999 and has already received 240 foreign students.
The university also emphasizes the exchange and cooperation with domestic colleges like Shandong University, Tianjin University of Finance and Economics, Shandong Normal University, Shandong University of Science and Technology and Shandong Academy of Social Science. Each year the university would send undergraduate and postgraduate students to Shandong University and Tianjin University of Finance and Economics for 1-year or 6-mongh study.
It has established Yanshan College and Dongfang College jointly with enterprises and has 10,000 enrolled students.
At the new starting point, the university will improve the talents training quality, research ability and play an active role in serving the society. It will make efforts in training practical talents and combining teaching and research and continue the contribution to the regional and state development.
